Advances on Variational Analysis, Optimization and Applications

We are pleased to announce that the Workshop "Advances in Variational Analysis, Optimization and Applications" will take place on September 6th, 2018 at the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti Hall of the University of Messina. The Organizing Committee decided to organize this event for the retirement of ouresteemed colleague Carmen Vitanza, to show her gratitude and appreciation.

The Workshop wishes to present recent developments in Variational Analysis and Optimization theory.

Variational Analysis encompasses a large area of modern mathematics, including classic calculus of variations, theories of perturbation, approximation, subgradient, subderivatives, set convergence and variational inequalities. Variational inequalities have undergone great development and influence both in the progress of variational analysis, and in applications to mathematical physics and, more recently, to engineering, statistics, economics, financial networks and generalized complementarity problems. Moreover, several classical and new theories, like infinite dimensional duality theory and variational and differential inclusions, have received a strong impulse by Variational Analysis.

Optimization is a rich and thriving mathematical discipline. Properties of minimizers and maximizers of functions rely intimately on a wealth of techniques from mathematical analysis, including tools from calculus and its generalizations, topological notions, and more geometric ideas. The powerful and elegant language of variational analysis unifies much of this theory.

Carmen Vitanza, along her career mainly focused her attention on the above described topics, and in particular on linear and non-linear elliptic and parabolic systems, variational inequalities and their applications to network equilibrium problems.
